Default Maximum URL length?

Hi,

We are launching a new site where some of the urls are fairly long - up to 200 characters.

They are "friendly" urls without querystrings but it is a large site with lots of sub folders so they
have to be quite long.

Is there a limit? Will URLs of a certain length not get indexed?

Thank you

I don't think there is limit per say for indexing. Ranking may be a different issue though for those urls.

The HTTP protocol does not put any boundary on the length of a URI. Servers must be proficient to handle the URI of any source they serve, and should be capable to handle URIs of unbounded length if they provide GET-based forms that could generate such URIs.

Actually, there are no permanent rules and regulations to mention in this connection but when you take a look at the way weblogs and forums are moderated over the net, you will become aware of that based on title tags, a sentence-long URL structure seems to be natural and recommended in almost all cases.
